IT CAME FROM OUT OF THE ICE : POWER RANKINGS (3/4/2019)

ANNOUNCEMENT : NO BLOG POST FOR THE COYOTES / DUCKS GAME ON 3/5.

Admittedly it's a little weird saying this, but the REDWINGS are the worst team in the league right now. Yes, Larkin is a monster, but outside of that, the line up is playing as if they have a real desire to just fold up the tent. They've been playing that way for a long time now. At the time I am writing this they are deciding to prove my point with a nice 4 game losing streak. Maybe this will piss a few Redwing fans off, but I actually painted over their helmet in my Frankin Hockey Standings line up. They are the Winnipeg Jets now because my old set didn't have one, the new Franklin Standings sets suck, they aren't even full helmets. So at some point I may buy a replacement online, but it won't be necessary to keep the standings accurate this season.

23-33-9

Yes, if I was going to put the Redwings up against the Senators right now, I would take the Senators. At least they are still playing with an attitude to ruin teams playoff runs. In fact they may have just ended the Panthers playoff shot this weekend.

23-28-5

What we have here is consistency. They are equally as bad as they were a month ago. Having said that, they are playing with some heart. They knocked off the Blackhawks who were fighting for their playoff lives over the weekend. I wouldn't be too quick to write this team off next season though. It's been a rough year, but with the Kings these days rough years don't come by often. Which sucks because I can't stand this damn team.

24-33-8

This team is just a little better than the were. Watching them right now is only interesting because of the massive number of mistakes they make. It's like watching the bad news bears of hockey. They have allowed the 3rd most goals in the league which usually doesn't mean anything good.

25-33-8

The Ducks have moved up 2 spots. This is basically a thank you for beating the Avs yesterday. They are a long way from having a shot at the playoffs at this point. It's the reason I had them even lower when they weren't a month ago. Having said that I would watch out for this team being a spoiler as the season moves forward.

25-32-9

Is on a bit of a streak right now. They have racked up an impressive 3 wins in a row for a team that could have folded up shop. For the Coyotes sake, I hope they can knock off some of the other teams we are trying to catch. Why not participate in the Senators and Ducks efforts to play spoiler. It would take a lot of things to happen for them to get in, but at least the effort is still alive.

29-30-7

They 7-2-1 in their last 10 games and are now 5 points out of a playoff spot. So how did they drop to 25? Well the last time I did a Power Rankings they looked good. They are winning games but don't have the fire of an actual playoff team. For Flyers fans, maybe the prove me wrong down the stretch. Right now however, I would take any of the team I have above them in a 7 game series.

32-26-8

Every time this team looks like they might make a run, they lose a few games they should have won. Currently 8pts out of the last Wild Card spot, tee times might be on the docket in April. Not enough defense.

27-30-9

I had these guys down at 30 the last time around. They have moved up to 30 just by staying in the race most of February. Unfortunately for their fans the team lost a big one to Edmonton tonight. It doesn't bode well for their playoff chances. Not enough desperation. They are currently 9pts out of the last playoff spot in the East.

30-28-8

I wasn't going to move these guys down until they started on this most recent couple of games where they just get totally destroyed. So here you have it.

27-30-9

The Rangers have one of the most legendary goalies of all time. Some how they have allowed the 7th most goals in the league. They slide from 19 to 21. Looks like no playoffs for them this year. 11 OT loses is the big issue.

27-27-11

The Bluejackets drop from 11 to 20. That's right. I just don't have any faith in these guys. They have 2 loses in a row and don't seem to be making the push they hoped for at the trade deadline. Could they catch Montreal? Maybe? I think down the stretch they don't hold up as much as I'd like to see them do it. Just for Tortorella's playoff comments alone. Record wise however, I mean just look at it. This should be a playoff team.

36-26-3

This is one of those teams I could have kept right where they were. However they have brought a bunch of teams in the West to the brink on their last road trip and that deserves credit. The team needs to get it together fast if they want a playoff shot. 10 points out after a loss to the Senators is rough. Do not put them on the Power Play, they have the 3rd best Power Play in the league.

28-26-11

Here are the Canadiens just hanging out. I thought this was a heck of a lot better team a month ago. Right now, I see them grabbing a playoff spot, but unless Price stands on his head, they don't get out of the first round. Montreal's Power Play by the way is the worst in the league. Pretty nuts for a team with 35 wins.

35-24-7

Toronto has one of the best records in the league. They are also 6-3-1 in their last 10 games. I have them at 17 because watching them I don't see a team that will go far in the playoffs. Call it a hunch. Are they as bad as 17th, probably not...will they prove to be better than 17...of course. Admittedly they look really good tonight against the Flames, but I am sticking with this ranking. I would not take them in a 7 game series ahead of any of the team in my Top 16.

40-21-4

This is another team like Toronto that I just feel is suspect. They did beat a weary Wild team in OT last night, but unless they can topple teams like Calgary, Arizona, Minnesota, San Jose and Vegas down the stretch on a regular basis. I am keeping them right here at 16. Their strong point....they allow the 6th fewest goals in the league.

38-25-5

The Avalanche are in deep (radio edit) right now. With the way the teams ahead of them are playing, they need some wins and fast to stay in the race. On second thought, just looking at the weekend, the should be behind the Preds. This team is a lot better than there record though, they just are not great at overtime games.

28-26-12

Has been right in about the middle of the pack for some time now. They have games where they look great and games where team "anger and frustration" clearly take them over and make them suck. They are currently on an annoying 2 game winning streak though which has kept the Coyotes from taking the first or second Wild Card spot in the West.

33-27-5

We are starting to get into really solid looking teams zone right now. Minnesota just had a 4 game win streak snapped by Nashville in OT. I do expect they will pay back the Preds tomorrow night, but of course I hope they don't. This is not because I hate Minnesota (my whole family is from there), but if it's between them and the Coyotes, I want the Coyotes in the playoffs. Still, credit should be given where credit is due. When they saw other teams in the West smelling blood, they go their act together...for right now.

32-27-7

Well I know their fans really hate John Tavares. I did have them at 2 overall, but it's been a shaky past 10 games.

37-21-7

I thought this team was great a month ago. They proved my point, but have been in a cooling off phase for about a week now. They have 2 loses in a row which include a 4-1 drubbing by Dallas. Still, I would not take this team lightly.

34-25-6

The Penguins are playing well right now, but they are also 2pts from losing a Wild Card spot. How they do in the coming weeks will tell a lot. They do not look like the dominating team they did a month ago.

34-22-9

The Coyotes are you know are my favorite team. I don't think their ranking is bias at all however. They have one of the best goalies from January 1st to now. They have the 2nd best PK and they have the longest current win streak in the league. Granted, they have a tough test against a Ducks team that is playing better tomorrow night...but right now..yeah they are at number 9. "They are the team scaring everyone right now" was something I heard over the weekend on broadcasts from other teams more than once over the weekend.

32-28-5

Winnipeg has been doing well as of late, but they have also had some odd loses (to the Senators twice) in the past month. Still a great team, but I am leaving them exactly where they were last month.

39-22-4

Are starting to look like the Capitals again. 7-3 over their past 10 and they are on a 4 game winning streak. I was really down on the Caps last month, it looks like they are getting ready for a push here and now.

38-21-7

Vegas has been hot and cold lately. For awhile there it looked like the Coyotes might catch them for a playoff spot, or Dallas or the Wild. However they have won their past 4 games and that has caused a bit of separation between them and the Wild Card pack. If they cool off, this race down the stretch could get nuts.

36-26-5

The CANES are super dangerous. In a 7 games series right now, they might be the best team in the league. They have the 2nd longest win streak in the league with 5 in a row. If you don't like the Surge, don't worry. It's not all about you.

36-23-6

Well the Flames looked like garbage against Minnesota the other night. They looked like garbage again tonight. This is either just them not being up to par right now, or it's a strong warning sign that they won't be able to compete past the first or second round. Mike Smith is feast or famine. Still a great team overall.

41-18-7

The Sharks are 6-3-1 over their past 10 games. I thought they were great to start the season, but they seem to be improving. I would love to see them get the top spot in the West and possibly match up against the Coyotes. Mainly because the Coyotes match up extremely well against them.

39-19-8

At 9-0-1 over their past 10 games and that record. It's impossible not to have the Bruins at number 2 right now. They have the 2nd best goals allowed per game average in the league.

39-17-9

I think I thought the Lightning would cool off. That didn't happen. That is pretty much all that needs to be said here. How is it that the Lightning only have 12 loses. Are you freakin kidding me?
