IT CAME FROM OUT OF THE ICE : COYOTES (3) VS KINGS (0) 11/18/19

CAPSULE : The Kings are not one of those teams you want to over-look and it seems they are always up for the game when it comes to playing the Coyotes. The 2 teams split last years season series 2 games to 2. The Kings were slow to the gate this year but are now on a 3  game win streak with victories over the Wild, Redwings and Knights. On top of that they have black and gray uniforms...which are always the sign that you mean business, or they ran out of color at the uniform print shop. The Kings are 8-11-1 and feature the leagues 3 least lethal Power Play. The Coyotes enter the game with a 12-7-2 record. They Coyotes are tied for the league’s most shoot out wins with 3. The Capitals, Flyers and Panthers also have 3 shoot-out wins. The good news for the Kings is that our attack goalie is not playing tonight. He is taking the night off from kicking the crud out of other team’s players.

THE BEST AT SOMETHING - The Kings actually get more shots on goal per game than any other team in the NHL.

DVORAK (18) – Had a beautiful no look pass to Garland to make the score 1-0 Coyotes at the time. There is a good chance he didn’t know Garland was there, but it was a perfect heads up play. Dvorak had another soft touch assist on the Coyotes 2nd goal in the 1st period.

SCHMALTZ (8) Had the 2nd assist on the Garland goal in the 1st period. He had a ton of energy in the 1st period almost taking it to the net himself through about 3 Kings players, but passed it off to Kessel giving him a decent shot on net. By the end of 2 period he had registered 2 assists and I am pretty sure he is also registered as “Awesome!”

KESSEL (81) – Had the second assist on the Coyotes 2nd goal. Don’t look now, but the production on the offensive end is starting to come for him. He is currently on a 3 game point streak.

KELLER (9) Not as much of a factor tonight as he has been in past games, but he did log a good amount of ice time and got a shot on net.

STEPAN (21) – Scored the 2nd goal in the 1st period for the Coyotes. It was just the 2nd goal for the Coyotes PP in 8 games. It actually looked like they might have been trying to score on this one. This is Stepan’s 2nd goal in 2 games.

GARLAND (83) – Scored a sick goal in the 1st period early into the game. He got an amazing no look assist from Dvorak on the play. In the 2nd period Garland had a crazy magician like assist to Chychrun on the Power Play. I say that because he did a quick little fake on the shot before getting the pass off.

GRABNER (40)-  Solid game. He didn’t get his usual breakaways, but overall another good game from him.

GOING TO JACK IN THE BOX – Is always a better call than standing against a wall. Actually a lot of stuff is a better call than that.

RICHARDSON (15) – Had a nice attempt late in the 1st period get partially blocked by the Kings and their goalie was able to make the save. I keep saying this, but it’s just a matter of time for Richardson before he starts making other teams regret showing up to play. He led the team in shots after 2 periods with 3. In the 2nd he had a late penalty that was ill-advised. Like if you went up to someone and said….”Should I take this penalty?” That answer is going to be “No!”

HINOSTROZA (13) – 2 shots on net, but a lot like Garland, spent quite a bit of time with the puck tonight.

CROUSE  (67) – 3 shots on goal. I would like to see him settle it down a bit. Sometimes his play seems too rushed.

JESS – It’s wasn’t a good blog for him tonight, looks like he mailed it in on half of these comments.

SODERBERG (34) – Seemed slightly out of sink tonight. Like you would totally not hire him as a plumber.

FISCHER (36)  Had a little over 11 minutes on the ice tonight and had 5 hits which led the team. That is all that needs to be said about his game.

18 – The number of shots the Coyotes blocked in the first 2 periods. It’s also the age you need to be to get into a Rated R movie without an adult.

OEL (23) Don’t worry about it. It’s just another night of doing it all. 2 shots on net, 3 hits and 3 blocks.

DEMERS (55) – 2 hits. Which is more than Glass Tiger had in the 80’s.

RAZOR – If you ever want to feel ripped off. Buy a tiny paper cutter and look at the tiny razor it comes with. That thing is going to last you probably 20 years of cutting paper even if you use it all the time. The razors in the razor you have for your face, will last 3 weeks if you are lucky. Crap-tastic.

CHYCHRUN (6) – Had a great shot in the 2nd and buried it on the Coyotes 3rd Power Play of the night. It made the score 3-0 Coyotes lead at the time.

GOLIGOSKI (33) Will need some ice. He had 4 blocks tonight.

NESS  (42) The more ice time he gets the better he looks. 2 blocks and a hit.

OESTERLE (82) Will also need some ice. Maybe him and Goligoski and OEL and Chychrun can get like a good deal at Fry’s.

RAANTA (32) – Did I mention that his paw helmet is epic. He saved a power play shot in the 3rd off of his face,  among other monster saves in the 3rd including a Kings breakaway that left him all alone against the shooter.

WRAP UP – For the 1st time in Coyotes history two goalies had back to back shutouts. Tyson talked on the broadcast about how odd it was that Raanta got the start after Kuemper shut out the Flames on Saturday. However when you look at Raanta’s stats against the Kings, it made a lot of sense. This team is probably going to rely on both goalies fairly evenly all season. I think if they are both playing like they are now…why not. This team has been bitten in the past with goalie injuries. Spreading out the play might be a long haul plan. The Coyotes finish the night 13-7-2. They also seem to have a 3 goal limit for this month, which is not an issue when the other team is scoring less than that.
