IT CAME FROM OUT OF THE ICE : COYOTES (2) VS STARS (4)  12/29/19

CAPSULE : At 21-14-4 coming in, the Stars have 46 pts just like the Coyotes. They have survived a coach getting fired and are currently 3rd in the Central division. That might be because they are the 2nd dirtiest team in the NHL next to Vegas. They also featured the best defense in the Western Conference. The Coyotes took a big loss in Vegas last night, but with a win tonight could be right back in 1st place in the Pacific Division. They come into this game at 21-15-4 with 46 points. Good enough for 2nd place in the Pacific Division at the moment.

GRABNER (40) –  Had a short handed breakaway in the 1st period and missed on a shot on net after a nice pass from Richardson. Grabner seems to have a breakaway once or twice every single game. Usually short-handed. Outside of that, not one of his better games.

OEL (23) –  Destroyed Benn in the 1st period and ended up getting called for interference because Benn had just released the puck a few seconds earlier. The Stars did not score on that Power Play. Overall I would say the penalty was fair. His first 2 periods of this game were just absolutely fantastic, but at the game wore on you could tell the Stars physicality was getting under his skin.

HALL (91) - Scored in the 1st period on a bouncing puck type play off of shot put on net by Garland. It is pretty cool to see Hall and Garland on the same line, because both players have a ton of offensive fire power. Hall knocked a Dallas player out of the game in the first on a drive towards the puck that ended up in a knee on knee collusion. No penalty was called and the play looked like just an unfortunate partial hit.

GARLAND (83) - Will take shots from the locker room so it was only a matter of time before he scored again, putting one in on a bad angle shot in the 2nd period. It was his team leading 13th goal of the season. He lead all forwards with 5 shots just in the 1st period. He also had an assist on the Hall goal in the 1st period.

STEPAN (21) – Got injured in the Golden Knights game on Saturday due to a high stick and had a bit of a jaw cage on his helmet tonight. He had 3 good shots in the 1st period. In the 2nd period Stepan got hit in the head on a head-hunting move that drew a 2 minute minor against the Stars. I think the play will likely result in a suspension. I have no idea how that play did not end in a 5 minute major at the very least. Stepan did not return to the game.

DVORAK (18) – Had an assist on the Hall goal in the 1st period. After that he had a pretty solid night.

GOLIGOSKI (33) – Lead the Defense  in shots after the 1st period with 3. I wasn't crazy about his 3rd period play.

GUNSLINGERS - The Coyotes out-shot the Stars 22-5 in the 1st period. Sadly this pace did not hold up for the entire game.

SCHMALTZ (8) - Had an assist on the Garland goal in the 1st period.

LYUBUSHKIN (46) –  Had a really good shot in the 2nd period at a goal off a really nice pass from Garland right in front of the net. If we are going to be playing teams that like to toss players around, Lyubuskin is great to have out there because he takes no crap.

SODERBERG (34) – Had an assist on the Garland goal in the 1st period, but outside of that it wasn’t a great effort out of him.

EXTENDA-CHRISTMAS - I always think it’s odd when companies are still running Christmas ads well after Christmas. Yeah - I am looking at you Nissan.

NESS (42) – Was a big part of a fantastic penalty kill in the 2nd period. Ness did not have a bad night at all.

RICHARDSON (15) –  Can’t seem to score even when he’s got great shots on net. He missed the net in the 3rd period by inches.

RAANTA (32) –  Fell apart in the 3rd period allowing 3 goals. Unfortunately it cost the Coyotes the game. He was fairly solid the 1st 2 periods, but the Coyotes didn’t allow very many early shots on net.

CHYCHRUN (6) –  1 shot and 1 block. Not one of his better nights.

CROUSE (67) –  Had 4 shots on net. I do wish he was out on the ice when OEL got slammed to the ice in the 3rd period.

KELLER (9) – A really rough night for him, and most of this game he looked over-matched which has not been the case at all lately.

FISCHER (36) – Had 3 hits. It was a pretty good night for him overall.

DEMERS (55) – 3 shots on goal, 4 hits, 4 blocks a great night for him in spite of the loss.

KESSEL (81) –  Got crushed by Benn in the 3rd period who was pretty much hitting everything he saw.

EXTERNAL ICE - The Calgary and Canucks game is still going on. I believe either team winning will put the Coyotes into 3rd in the Pacific.

WRAP UP - This is the first time the Coyotes have lost 3 straight games all year. This team needs to pick themselves up again, because even with Kuemper out, there are no excuses injury wise. I will say that someone in the facebook fan group I am in was getting heck for saying the team is worse with Hall on it. To this point they are not wrong, you can look at the stats and see that is definitely the case. I don’t think it will last though. The team will gel again and get it going. It’s just a matter of time. The Coyotes are in need of a win streak, not just a win.
