IT CAME FROM OUT OF THE ICE : COYOTES (4) VS BLUE JACKETS (2)  12/3/19

CAPSULE :
Since November 15th the Blue Jackets have pretty much rocked at home with wins over St. Louis and the Penguins. Their only home loss was to the Flyers. Unfortunately they also beat the Coyotes the first time the two teams met this year. The Blue Jackets record coming into this one is 11-11-4. The Coyotes have been average at best lately at 2-2-2 in their past 6 games, but a lot of that was due to a crazy November schedule. The Coyotes come into this game 2nd in the Pacific Division with a 15-9-4 record.

SODERBERG (34) – Had an assist on the Fischer goal in the 2nd period. He also had an assist on the Crouse goal in the 2nd, but that one was actually his shot, just going off of Crouse’s butt. Deep into the 3rd he also got his own goal for an empty netter to put the Coyotes up 4-2.

STEPAN (21) –  Had some outstanding effort on the backcheck tonight. He seemed pretty pissed whenever a Blue Jacket player got by him.

RICHARDSON (15) –  Didn’t really show up on the score sheet, but he was 87% in the face-off circle. Pretty epic.

DVORAK THE CONQUEROR (18) – Has had enough. He was not letting Columbus players have it easy tonight at all. He also had an assist on the Keller goal in the 1st period.

ODDLY CREEPY - If you get a wrap from Wendy’s and you look at that Wendy’s face logo just staring at you. It’s a little weird. I just wanna eat this wrap without being starred down.

SCHMALTZ (8) – Going to put his game in the “just okay” category.

GARLAND (83) – Didn’t register a shot in the 1st 2 periods. That is about as rare as finding bigfoot just hanging out at a mini-golf course.

SOUR-CROUSE (67) – Scored a goal off his butt in the 2nd period putting the Coyotes up 3-1. This came on a rush after Kuemper made probably the save of the night on the other end.

KESSEL (81) – Is becoming an assist machine with one on the Keller goal in the 1st period. Later in the 3rd period he hit the post with a good shot attempt.

GRABNER (40) –  Not a great night for him.

SATURDAY NIGHT IS JUST ALRIGHT - So far this year the Coyotes are 3-3 at home on Saturday’s in their wonky old logo jersey’s that I can’t stand. That means that when they are not wearing that jersey….they are basically twice as good. This game isn’t on a Saturday, I just wanted to make that point, because I can’t stand their old logo. Just like if I lived in Boston, I wouldn’t be able to stand that ridiculous jersey that team has.
KELLER CONTRACT (9) – Scored a Power Play goal in the 1st period. He continues to be one of the leaders on the team in points and yet some fans still feel the need to complain about him. That goal put the Coyotes up 1-0 at the time. Keller led the Coyotes in shots with 5.
FISCHER (36) –  Had 2 really good chances to score in the 1st period. The 2nd one somehow defied the laws of physics and went over the net from like a foot out. The other one hit the post. He would not be denied in the 2nd putting a puck right off the crossbar and down. The last time Fischer played a game in Columbus, he had a hat-trick. His goal in the 2nd period tonight gave the Coyotes a 2-1 lead at the time.

HINOSTROZA (13) – Had the puck a ton, but only got one shot on net.

OEL (23) – Solid positioning and did a great job of frustrating the Blue Jackets offense. He had a few good chances to put the puck on net, but didn’t connect.

DEMERS (55) – Lead the defense in shots on net with 3 after 2 periods.

CHYCHRUN (6) – Would not be out-done in penalty minutes tonight with 4. He did have 2 shots on net.

HEADLESS FETT - That moment when you realize, Jango Fett had his head cut off with a light saber in STAR WARS Episode 2, which conveniently and immediately cauterized the wound . Then later Boba Fett pics up the helmet…..but that head is still in there.  Pretty nuts. File this under stuff Jenn noticed.

GOLIGOSKI (33) –  Coming into this game, had 63 blocks this season. Tonight he has an assist, we will take those too. He did have 3 or 4 bad passes tonight going to players that are not on the Coyotes.

LYUBUSHKIN (46) – Good night for him. Along with the rest of the defense.

EXCEPTION TO THE RULE STATS - During the last broadcast the announcers pointed out that the Sharks hadn’t won a game all year after trailing in the first period. Oddly the game they mentioned that stat on was the exception. It’s seems like a lot of nights when Matt or Tyson bring up a stat like that, it goes south for the Coyotes. It’s the same reason I wish they would stop telling us how great Kuemper is on night’s he’s playing. Tonight, it all worked out, I am just not a fan of it.

OESTERLE (82) –  Did a really solid job tonight of knowing when to jump up into the play and when not to.

KUEMPER (35) –  Okay, now I can say it. He is the best goalie in the NHL right now. Statistically and everything…..I mean…it’s science. He also looked like he had some sort of Batman padding on his chest tonight. I am not sure what was going on there.

WRAP UP –  The Coyotes started off a 4 game road trip with an important win. Mainly because it brings them within 1 point of the division leading Oilers. Also because wins are just cool to begin with. The Coyotes are now 16-9-4.
