IT CAME FROM OUT OF THE ICE : COYOTES (3) VS PENGUINS (4) S/O 1/12/20
CAPSULE : The Penguins come into this game with the 2nd
best record in the Metropolitan Division with a record of 27-12-5. They feature
the 9th best offense in the league and also have the best goalie in
the league Tristan Jarry who leads the league in Save %, Goals Per Game and
Shutouts. The Coyotes come in reeling a bit having not scored in their past 2
games. The currently sit in 2nd place in the Pacific Division with a
25-18-4 record.
GARLAND
(83) – Scored a goal late in the 1st
period to tie it up 1-1 at the time. That was Garland’s team leading 15th
goal of the season. The last 2 games, I don’t think I have seen Garland get a
shot that close to the net.
HALL (91) - Had a great pass to Garland for an assist on the Coyotes first goal of the game. Both players were doing a little passing back and forth to get deep into the Penguins defensive zone. In the 2nd period Hall scored a goal that seemed almost geometrically impossible to tie the game 2-2 at the time.
RICHARDSON (15) – Was giving Malkin of the Penguins the business late in the 1st period and was able to draw a penalty out of it. I haven’t seen Richardson this feisty since last season. Richardson also dominated in the face-off circle winning 75% of those.
HJALMARSSON (46) – Came back today after missing a ton of the season due to a broken leg. That break came on a blocked shot. He did get called on a mystery penalty in the 2nd period. That penalty lead to a Power Play goal by the Penguins that gave them a 2-1 lead at the time. Regarding the Penalty Kill for the Coyotes, they had gone 7 straight games without allowing a goal prior to today.

OEL (23) – Crushed
Rust in the 2nd period. The play led to a retaliation penalty with Oesterle
taking a huge hit to the face. In the 3rd he had a shot right in
front of the net on a shot that Dvorak almost put in the net and blasted it
over the net. Made a play with about 23 seconds to go in the game that probably
saved the game sending it into OT tied at 3-3.
STEPAN (21) – Had a good shot on net in the 2nd period after catching a high puck with his hand. He ended up leading the team with shots after 2 periods with 3. In the 3rd period Stepan put an awesome assist from Hjalmarsson in the net. That goal was a quick tic-tac-toe type play and was just completely sick. That was Stepan’s 8th goal of the season and it put the Coyotes up 3-2 at the time.
HINOSTROZA (13) – Had 3 shots tonight. It was another high energy game out of him, but man, I would have loved to have seen him get a goal in the shoot-out.

1 IS THE LONELIEST NUMBER – Not a single Coyote even had 2
shots on net in the first period.
CHYCHRUN (6) – Jack-stomped
Hornqvist into the boards in the 3rd period. Hornqvist was so
impressed with the legal hit, that he patted Chychrun on the butt after the
play.
HMMM – So if I get a Discover card, a little money storm is
going to follow me where ever I go? Nice!!!!!!!!
DVORAK (18) – Had a
pass off the boards to Hall that ended up in the Penguins net. Nice assist for
him.
KELLER (9) – I can’t
remember the last game where he didn’t register a single shot on net. He did
get a minor penalty in the 1st period. Keller did have a really good
late shot in the OT, but couldn’t bury it.
DEMERS (55) – Very very solid day for him today. Just 1
shot, but defensively he was fantastic.
GOLIGOSKI (33) – Got credited with an assist on the Garland
goal in the 1st period, but didn’t have all that much to do with the
play.
KESSEL (81) – It
seems like he has had a lot of games lately where he has hardly been mentioned. When the brought him out for the shoot-out, it was a bit of a worry, because it felt like Tocchet was indicating they had run out of shooters.
SCHMALTZ (8) – No assists or shots for him all day. A pretty
rare game where that occurs from him.
SODERBERG (34) – Not much going on in the game for him
today, and he was 1 of about 100 Coyotes players that could not put the puck in
the net in the shoot-out.
HILL (31) – Played
out of his mind. The Coyotes probably deserved overtime after that third
period, but wow, he dominated in the shootout and almost pulled it out for the
team.
CROUSE (67) – A pretty solid game out of him but I would
rather have seen him take a few more shots, that he passed up.
FISCHER (36) – Had a
penalty today, but that was pretty much it for him.
OESTERLE (82) – Had 3 hits and 2 blocks.
EXTERNAL ICE – Can’t say Tkachuk didn’t have this coming.
Gotta love it when our rivals are wearing themselves out one hit at a time. Vancouver beat the Wild today, but that didn’t
stop the Coyotes from moving back into 2nd place, after falling to 3rd
place over night.
WRAP UP - The point
for getting to OT, keeps the Coyotes in 2nd place in the Pacific
Division. Clearly a win would have been better, but the Coyotes almost never
win at home the first game after a road trip, so the point is definitely welcome.
The Coyotes now have 55 points and a record of 25-18-5. The big hope is that this game will turn into at least a point streak. Calgary can strengthen their lead in the division tomorrow with a win, but outside of that not other changes in the standings are possible till Tuesday.
