IT CAME FROM OUT OF THE ICE : COYOTES (6) VS FLYERS (2) 1/4/20
CAPSULE : Raanta will be between the pipes for the 7th
game in a row. Since Raanta has never been a full blown starter and has had a
history of injuries, you can only wonder how many times Tocchet will feel
comfortable pushing this button. The Coyotes come in 2nd in the
Pacific Division with 50 pts at 23-16-4, but a Vancouver win tonight could
throw a wrench in the works if the Coyotes can’t pick up their 3rd
home win in a row. The Flyers have struggled a bit lately but are still a very
potent team. At 22-14-5 they sit in the 2nd Wild Card spot in the
East with 49 pts. The Flyers Power Play is slightly better than the Coyotes at
20.1% so we probably do not want to put them on the Power Play at all.
STEPAN (21) – Got a great breakaway in the first and walked
right around the Flyers D, for a nice shot that almost went in. Steps, does
look like he’s got his game going tonight. In the 2nd period he had
an assist on the Crouse goal. That was his 9th assist of the season.
Late in the 3rd period he put
the Coyotes up 6-2 at the time with an empty net goal. The goal was also a
short-handed goal.
RICHARDSON (15) – Scored
his second goal in 2 games on a puck that just kinda magically went in the net on
the Flyers tender. I have said this a ton of times, but Brad works extremely
hard a lot of nights for this team and has also had some really rough nights.
It is great to see him getting rewarded offensively.
HINOSTROZA (13) – Was flying all over the ice in the 1st
period. He picked up an assist on the Richardson goal in the 1st
that put the Coyotes up 1-0 at the time. After 2 periods, he lead the team in
penalty minutes with 4. So that’s something to brag about tomorrow.
OESTERLE (82) – Had his first goal of the season off a long
shot in the 1st period that went off a Flyers player into the net.
That goal put the Coyotes up 2-0 at the time. Oesterle does have a good shot,
it’s nice to see him taking one at an opportune time. In the 2nd period Oesterle got
called on a “ghost hooking” penalty. That is what I call penalties that didn’t
happen. Then again, lots of things happen…the way they didn’t happen.
LYUBUSHKIN (46) – Had
an assist on the Oesterle goal in the 1st period. I mentioned
Lyubushkin had a solid game against the Ducks. Apparently it was good enough
for the team to give him the pelt after the game. It’s basically like the teams
1 star award among the players.
SCHMALTZ (8) – Had an assist on the Oesterle goal in the 1st
period and on the Keller goal in the 3rd period. I am very sure that
Schmaltz is actually secretly on the ice all the time and dresses as other
players making even more assists than we already think. Because that is what this
dude does.
KELLER (9) – Scored his 11th goal of the season
in the 1st period off a weak shot on net during the 2nd
Power Play for the Coyotes of the night. That put the Coyotes up 3-0 at the
time. That goal by Keller sent the Flyers starting goal tender to the locker
room. Because that dude could not stop a giant inflatable hockey net from going
in the regular net in that first period. Keller put a shot past the new Flyers
goalie in the 2nd period and that shot hit the post behind the
goalie that just stayed out of the net. In the 3rd period Keller
drilled one into the net for a goal putting the Coyotes up 5-1 at the time.
Keller has 12 points in his last 13 games.
HALL (91) - Had an
assist on the Keller goal in the 1st period.
DEMERS (55) – Spent his night passing to the Flyers. He had
a blind pass behind the net on a 4 on 4 in the 2nd period that ended
up going right back to the Flyers. With about 5 minutes to go in the 2nd,
he did the same thing again only the pass was down the right side boards. Then
again with about 3 minutes left in the 2nd period. I have not seen this kind of thing happen in
decades. Very strange.
SONIC – “Don’t get in my head man, there’s barely room for
me in there.”
KESSEL (81) – Had an
assist on the Keller goal in the 1st period.
CROUSE (67) – Scored with 1 second left in the 2nd
period to put the Coyotes up 4-0 at the time. This shot he put on net
backhanded was freakin crazy good. You could tell the Flyers were pretty pissed
because on the 1 second face-off to end the 2nd period, they were
trying to start fights. I can not say enough how much I love Crouse. This dude
is just class all the way. Watch any of his interviews and you will see what I mean.
GARLAND (83) – Was one of only 2 forwards that didn’t have a
shot on goal. The other one was Soderberg. Usually when that happens to Conor
he blows up the next game or two.
GOLIGOSKI (33) – Had his 21st assist of the
season late in the 2nd period on the Crouse goal.
CHYCHRUN (6) – Had an
assist on the Richardson goal, a hit, and 2 blocks.
OEL (23) – Didn’t
have a shot on net, but did have 4 hits and 3 blocks. A very solid game from
him.
ARBYS – Has a cheddar fish sandwich right now. It’s pretty
amazing. It’s also not just a square. I mean that fish is just so huge it doesn’t
even fit in the bun. I mean, it if did
fit in the bun, you wouldn’t want that bun, because that sucker would be like
massive.
FISCHER (36) – Had a
good chance with speed up the ice to put the puck in the net, but just got
taken off the play at the last second by the Flyers defense.
DVORAK (18) – Great effort tonight. 2 shots on net and hit
and a block.
SODERBERG (34) – Didn’t register a shot on goal. He did have
a hit though. The team didn’t need his offense tonight, but I would like to see
him get going soon.
RAANTA (32) – Left
the game after 2 periods with a lower body injury. When he left the game the
Coyotes were up 4-0. It didn’t take long for the Flyers to score 2 goals once
Hill came in. To Hill’s defense, he didn’t start the game, but at least 1 of
the shots that went in on Hill should never have gone in. This team has a LOT
of talent regarding it’s tenders, but you don’t want Kuemper or Raanta out for
long periods of time.
HILL (31) – Had a rough start, but ended up making 10 saves
in the 3rd period. To be honest, I like Hill an d he had a great
season so far with the Roadrunners, but I would rather have Raanta back sooner
than later.
EXTERNAL ICE – Boston has only won 4 of their last 10 games but
did have a 9pt streak going coming into today. Needless to say, they dropped
the puck today and lost to the Oilers today 4-1. That put the Oilers at 49pts.
Vegas also won today 5-4 in OT over St. Louis and now has 54 pts on the season.
No matter what happens the rest of today, they will retain 1st place
in the Pacific Division for now.
WRAP UP – The Coyotes score 6 goals and pretty much
dominated this game. The final probably should have been 4-1 Coyotes if you
take out the weak goals, but overall the team has it going right now. The sit
in 2nd in the Pacific just 2 points behind the Knights and they have
a game in hand. When is the last time you can say the Coyotes scored 10 goals
in 2 games?
