IT CAME FROM OUT OF THE ICE : COYOTES (2) VS BLACKHAWKS (3)  S/O 2/1/20

CAPSULE :  I'm a street walking cheetah , With a hide full of napalm , I'm a runaway son of the nuclear A-bomb , I am a world's forgotten boy , The one who searches and destroys …..*

GARLAND (83)    Early in the 1st period it seemed like Garland had about 4 really good shots. One was on a break-away where Blackhawks goaltender Crawford was just up to the task and was able to make a toe save.  In the 2nd period Garland would score late to tie the game at 2-2. This was another breakaway opportunity that Garland did not let slip by. Hard to believe with all the talent the Coyotes have, that a dude who was playing in the AHL just last year, is the most productive player on the team.

KELLER (9) – The Coyotes had a Power Play in the 1st period after dominating for 7 minutes straight. For some reason going on the Power Play actually killed the team’s momentum. Part of the problem was Keller taking a dumb penalty in the offensive zone during the Power Play.

SODERBERG (34) – Had 2 shots in the first period, but I noticed his defensive efforts were pretty outstanding early. He did get credit for the assist on the Richardson goal in the 2nd period. In regards to shots, he lead the team with 5 shots after 2 periods. This might have been Soderberg’s best game where he didn’t score a goal.

OESTERLE (82) – Looked really good in this one making some great plays defensively knocking Blackhawks players around like rag-dolls.

MCDONALDS – Why do you have to be so creepy?  I am not pumped we got all this McDonald’s for such a great price.

RICHARDSON (15)  Decked a Blackhawks player in the 2nd. It’s nice to see him back out on the ice. He was one of the few Coyotes that had it going in the 2nd period scoring on a rebound to make the game 1-2 Blackhawks at the time.

HINOSTROZA (13) – Had a breakaway in the 2nd that looked a lot like Garland’s in the 1st period, but couldn’t put it past the Blackhawks net-minder. The shot had the goalie backing into the net and he almost slid into the net with the puck.

CHYCHRUN (6)  Had a strange penalty called on him late in the 2nd period for hocking. Only on the play the Blackhawks player clearly grabbed his stick. Chychrun was merely knocking the player off the puck.

KESSEL (81)  Had a chance in front of the net in the 3rd period but couldn’t put it in the net on the Power Play. The Power Play in the 3rd period looked a lot better than it did in the 2nd.

SCHMALTZ (8) – Is gifted some games where he doesn’t register a shot, but somehow looked extremely active on the ice and kept a lot of plays alive. Tonight was one of those nights.

HALL (91) -  Had an opportunity in the OT to put the game away but missed on a breakaway shot. Later he was casually taking the puck up the ice and had a turnover that gave the Blackhawks a shot that Raanta had to make a great save on. Hall did have 3 shots on net, but I wouldn’t call it a good game for him. He did get another assist, so that’s good.

DVORAK (18)   Had 3 shots and logged the second most ice time of any forward besides Hall.

HJALMARSSON (4)  It felt like it was a decent game for him, but he didn’t have a block or a hit. He was the only defensive player to not get credit for either of those. He also had no shots on net.

CAPOBIANCO (75)   Had a few mistakes but was playing hard with 4 hits.

STEPAN (21) – Destroyed a Blackhawks player late in the OT. He was also 71% in the face-off circle.

DEMERS (55) – Outstanding game for him, the dude had 5 blocks. What else do you want? 5 blocks equaled what the rest of the entire defense had in blocks. Demers also had an assist on the Garland goal.

GOLIGOSKI (33) – Had an assist on the Richardson goal in the 2nd period.

CROUSE (67) – A pretty solid game for him, but he only registered 1 shot.

RAANTA (32)  Gave up a really easy shot just over mid-way through the 1st period. After that he pretty much locked it down until it came to the shoot-out when he allowed the Blackhawks first to players to score. While he didn’t win the game by himself, this was by a long shot Raanta’s best game of the season. He definitely deserved a win. His efforts also featured one of the best saves I have seen from any goalie this season. Matt McConnell referred to it as a "scorpion save" and that was the perfect description.

EXTERNAL ICE Vancouver leads the Pacific Division now winning today 4-3 in OT over the Islanders. They are currently 30-18-4 with 64 pts, but this is a team I could see running out of gas soon. They had to do a ton just to get back in the race. I guess they could do something like the Blues did last year, but I think Vancouver has far less talent than St. Louis had last year. Nashville lost tonight which was pretty helpful for the Coyotes. The downside was that it was the Golden Knights that beat them. Currently the Golden Knights have a 2 point lead on the Coyotes.

WRAP UP – No matter how well the other team’s goalie is playing. The Coyotes will not win very many games if they can’t put more than 2 pucks in net.  Signed – Broken Record. Secondly Garland is not going to win games all by himself. Hall has got to be better along with Keller and Kessel. The Coyotes hold a WildCard spot but by just 3 pts over both Winnipeg and the Blackhawks who each have 56 pts. The Blackhawks have 2 games in hand on the Coyotes and the Jets have 1. The Coyotes are now 26-21-7 with 59 pts.
