IT CAME FROM OUT OF THE ICE : COYOTES (7) VS LIGHTNING (3)  2/22/20

CAPSULE :  Tampa Bay comes into this game 40-16-5, which is second place in the Atlantic Division. In their last 10 games the Lightning are 9-1-0 with their only loss in that time frame being to the Golden Knights. The Coyotes have lost 2 straight (which you know if you follow the team or read this blog). The Coyotes remain just 1 point out of a playoff spot due to losses by just about everyone they are in the race with last night. The Coyotes come into this game 30-26-8.

STEPAN (21) – The goal that put the Lighting up 1-0 in the first period was likely due to him just leaving his guy open in front of the net leaving him to put a puck that went off the boards into an open net. Raanta was guarding the shot side of the net on that play. Stepan would get a goal of his own in the 3rd period to put the Coyotes up 7-3. The last time the Coyotes scored 7 goals was also against the Lightning.

HJALMARSSON (4) Had a play in the 1st period where he was able to get his stick on a pass that was headed for a Tampa player sitting there for a wide open shot on net. Effort wise Hjalmarsson is one of the hardest workers on this entire team.

GARLAND (83) : 2 GOALS )    Took his first shot in 2 games in the 1st period and scored his 21st goal of the season on a beautiful shot from about 15 feet out. This kind of makes you wonder what would have happened if he’d actually taken a shot in the past 2 games. In the 3rd period, the Coyotes scored on another Power Play on a shot that ended up going off of Garland’s glove after he was knocked to the ice. There was a review, but the goal was allowed to stand, because there was no goalie interference and Garland never motioned to push the puck into the net. If you read this blog a lot, you know I love Garland, tonight was a huge night for him, but when he had a chance to score a hat-trick, Garland passed it to Stepan for an assist, that Stepan scored on. If I have one plea for him, it’s to keep it going every night. Because when he is on, holy cow.

KELLER (9) : 2 GOALS ) – Not too long after Garlands goal, Keller put the Coyotes up 2-1 in the 1st period. His goal was from about the same spot on the ice that Garland scored. I can’t remember the last time the Coyotes scored 2 goals in the first period, much less the last time Keller scored a goal. In the 3rd period, Keller had a huge breakaway off a really good effort by Crouse to get the puck to him and buries it for his 2nd goal of the game.

TOE NAILS – When my dog bites her toe nails you can hear it from a block away.

SODERBERG (34) – Had a great chance in front of the net in the 1st period, but the shot was just saved by the Lightning tender Vasilevskiy. In the 2nd period Soderberg would be credited with a goal that on the replay looked like it went in off an un-intentional shot from Lightning player Gourde. That goal put the Coyotes up 3-1 at the time.  Soderberg’s goal came on a Power Play.

CROUSE (67) – Had a late charge on net wide open, but couldn’t get it past the Lightning net-minder. Crouse had 1 shot on net after 2 periods.

RICHARDSON (15)  After giving up 2 goals in what seemed like less than a minute, the Coyotes needed a goal and Richardson scored his 5th goal of the season to put the Coyotes up 4-3 just over half way through the 2nd period. Overall Richardson had one of his best games of the year. He also had 5 hits.

HALL (91) -  Was tied for the team lead in shots on net with 4 after 2 periods.  The other player with 4 shots after 2 periods was Soderberg. He racked up yet another assist on the Richardson goal in the 2nd period.

LYUBUSHKIN (46)  Had an assist and 3 shots on net after 2 periods. His 3 shots were more than most of the forwards.

ALL THESE PEOPLE – Not a nacho fry in sight.

OESTERLE (82) – Committed a strange penalty knocking the stick out of a Lightning players hand while the Coyotes were on the Power Play. It’s hard to complain about penalties called “against” the Coyotes however. They are the least penalized team in the NHL.

HINOSTROZA (13) – I feel like he might not be with this team after Monday’s trade deadline. I love Vinny, but his production has been very low for quite some time now.

OEL (23) – Had an assist on the Garland goal in the 1st period.

SICK – If I see one more Bloomberg or iphone ad, I am going to hurl.

GOLIGOSKI (33) –Had an assist on the Keller goal in the 1st period.

HAYTON (29)  Looks really comfortable on the Kessel, Garland line. I am not saying he’s having a huge game, but he is looking like he belongs.

KESSEL (81)  Needs to stop trying to pass when he is 4 feet in front of the net. He did have a pretty good opportunity to score on a shot in the 3rd, but just need to put it another inch left.

SCHMALTZ (8) – Not his best game by far. I rarely saw him with the puck tonight. I did see him on a drive down the ice that drew a penalty, so that’s something.

DVORAK (18)  Ended the night with 2 hits and a shot on goal. Not fantastic, but the team didn’t really need him on offense. They needed the other smart plays he made tonight.

RAANTA (32)  2 of the 3 goals that went in on him were on rebounds. Another fantastic effort out of him and you have to love that he finally got some goal support.

EXTERNAL ICE The Jets lost tonight 4-2 to the Flyers. That continued a rash of games that started last night that all helped the Coyotes at least a little. Nashville unfortunately won 4-3 over Columbus so they are still within 2 pts of the Coyotes at 68 with 4 games in hand. The Golden Knights and Vancouver have late games, but they are of less concern at the moment than Winnipeg and Nashville.

WRAP UP – The Coyotes really needed this win. It puts them back in a Wild Card spot for now. It would be helpful if the Bluejackets, Flames and Nashville fail to catch them in points over the next two weeks. The Coyotes will be playing 4 games while Calgary plays 7, Nashville plays 7 and Columbus plays 6. This also marks another game where the Coyotes are definitely good enough to beat top tier teams, but habitually have let downs to teams they should crush.
