IT CAME FROM OUT OF THE ICE : COYOTES (4) VS CANUCKS (2)  3/4/20

CAPSULE :  Vancouver comes into this game 34-25-6. They are on a 3 game losing streak and the Coyotes really need that to continue tonight. At 74 points the Canucks are 2 points ahead of the Coyotes. The Coyotes come in with 72 points. You probably knew that though, if you were doing the math. The Coyotes are 32-27-8. Their last time on the ice seems like it was a month ago. Since that time they have slipped out of a playoff spot, but have plenty of time to get back in, being just 3 points out of that 3rd spot. Right now it’s still looking like the Coyotes need to finish the season 11-4-0 to get in, but that changes on a day to day game to game basis.

OEL (23) – I like seeing him take shots on the Power Play. The group has been doing better this year on the Power Play than last year, but you are always looking to improve. In the 2nd period OEL had a turnover that ended up in a shot on net that hit the post. He had an assist on the Crouse goal in the 3rd period.  Very late in the 3rd period, he scored on an empty netter to seal the win. This was the 2nd game in a row where OEL scored an empty netter from behind his own net.

SODERBERG (34) – Scored a goal in the 1st period on one of the strangest bounces of the year. Kind of a curve puck that bounced up, went zippin around, and eventually off the shoulder of the Canucks goalie. The puck ricocheted off a skate or stick from behind the net and miraculously ended up in it. I have seen some crazy bounces, but that one of the nuttier ones. Soderberg had a nice little shot attempt about 10 minutes into game, but that one went just wide. Soderberg did get an assist on the Schmaltz goal in the 3rd period.

SCHMALTZ (8) – Not crazy about his hard passes on that 2nd Power Play for the Coyotes. 2 times on the same Power Play his passes were either intercepted or went nowhere. Schmaltz did hit the post to start the 2nd period. He also settled down and had a pretty good game after that. About mid-way through the 3rd period, he would bury it off a rebound to make the score 2-2 at the time.

DELIVER THE PUCK – It seems like Todd Walsh grabbed on to this little tid-bit about what went right in the Buffalo game, and decided to say “deliver the puck” about 100 times tonight.

CROUSE (67) – Got robbed in the 1st period on a shot late. I guess the goal-tender for the Canucks is a backup, but he’s played well early in this one. I don’t know… I don’t follow or care about other teams goalies. In the 3rd period, Crouse got a nice tip in off a OEL shot and put the Coyotes up 3-2 at the time.

KESSEL (81)  Had a great backhander in the 1st period that was saved by the Canucks goalie. Just one of a bunch of good saves that guy had in the 1st period. Kessel  looked very active in the 1st period.

HORMEL CHILLI – Wins the best commercial of the night award hands down. I am not sure how many crazy dances I saw, but it was a lot. I mean, this one dude had Freddy Kruger length arms.

STEPAN (21) – Saved a goal in the 2nd period that was headed into a wide open net. This was a big game out of him.

HALL (91) -  Had a huge opportunity to score in the 2nd, all alone on a breakaway and ended up barely getting a shot off.  In the 2nd Hall was coming down the ice hard and got tripped up with a Canucks player sliding into the Canucks goalie. Fortunately the did not end up in the Canucks goalie getting hurt. I can’t stand when goalies get hurt.

GOLIGOSKI (33) – A pretty bad game for him, pretty much every pass he made, ended up on a Canucks players stick. He also took a dumb penalty in the 2nd period in the offensive zone. The PK held up on that one.

OESTERLE (82) – Had a nice shot in the 3rd period on a good steal. He didn’t score, but you gotta like that play.

KELLER (9) – Has 6 points in his last 3 games. In this one he got called for a non-penalty in the 3rd where he just retaliated against a Canucks player for cramming him head first into the boards. Probably not a great move on Keller’s part. That penalty unfortunately lead to a Canucks goal making it 1-1 at the time.

GARLAND (83)  Overall a quiet game out of him, but great effort in the 3rd.

AIA BASKETBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP – Why are we watching kids play basketball in the dark? Can’t get a light on in that gym? Strange advertisement.

RICHARDSON (15)  Had a valiant effort in the 3rd on an empty netter, and hit it blocked late. He probably should have passed to Hinostroza, but you gotta like the effort though.

TRAVIS’s GREEN SQUAD – I think Matt McConnel meant to say “Travis Green’s Squad” in reference to the Canucks coach. I mean, I guess one of the colors for the Canucks is green.

HINOSTROZA (13) – Basically made that 3rd goal for the Coyotes happen just off of his effort to drive the puck into the zone. He deservedly got an assist on the play. Great game out of him overall.

HAYTON (29)   He didn’t have a shot on net, but I really like him out there battling for possession of the puck in the offensive zone. Not a bad game out of him.

DVORAK (18)  This was a rough one for him.

HJALMARSSON (4) Great game out of him. He even registered an assist.

DEMERS (55) – Very solid game out of him.

LYUBUSHKIN (46) – Slowly becoming one of the team’s best defensemen. 4 hits in this one.

KUEMPER (35)   Brilliant as usual. He looks up to par for this time of year. Gotta love that the team gave him some goal support.

EXTERNAL ICE The Flames (77 points) beat the Jackets in OT. That didn’t help the Coyotes. This was a pretty unfortunate turn of events for the Coyotes because the Flames were trailing 2-0 deep into the 3rd period. No other games played tonight had an impact on the Coyotes.

WRAP UP – The team needed this win. They got it. The good news for them is that a lot of the games coming up are against teams they need to catch. The Coyotes now sit at 74pts just 1 game out of a playoff spot. They are tied in points with both Vancouver and Winnipeg. Also my prayers go out to Jody Jackson and her family, my condolences.
